Maria Ficalora

Maria began knitting in college. The colors and textures of the yarns were seductive and making things was always a passion. As a graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design her fine art background informed her designs in knitwear. She subsequently taught machine knitting at RISD for two years. Maria moved to New York after school and began designing for private clients, opening her office in 1985. About the same time she began knitting costumes, starting with the Muppets. This led to work for theater, films and TV. She has had stores on New York’s upper east side and on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Today Maria designs a collection of knit separates for private clients, holding <a href="http://www.intheknit.com/pages/events" class="pink">trunk shows</a> across the country. Her work has developed from suiting for working women to more casual chic separates as her sense of style has relaxed and evolved. Her current <a href="http://www.intheknit.com/collections/collection" class="pink">collection</a> uses the years of creative experience to express a feminine elegance with finely detailed technique. She remains committed to high quality standards for fit and design. Her work has been seen in The New York Times, Vogue Knitting, and Avenue. Knitting for <a href="http://www.intheknit.com/collections/costumes" class="pink">costumes</a> has grown into a wonderful creative outlet as she is asked to make a wide range of shapes and patterns and solve many challenging design issues. Her latest work includes knitwear for Broadway shows such as BILLY ELLIOT, JERSEY BOYS, and WEST SIDE STORY. Her latest film work has been for Meryl Streep in JULIE AND JULIA. Maria lives in New York with her son.
